Eye Examination
  1. Eyes can be checked at any age but is recommended at 6 months for all children.
  2. If no red reflex is seen, or if an eye turns in, then the child needs to be seen immediately.
  3. In the eye examination, pupil response and tracking is checked, and then the eyes are dilated. After dilation (very safe), retinoscopy is done with a light to tell whether a child is significantly farsighted or nearsighted (or neither) by neutralizing the red reflex with different lenses. After this information is obtained, then the optic nerve and retina should be checked also.
  4. Depending on the results of the examination, that will determine when the child needs to be seen again.
